A girl stood in an abandoned church. Stirring the mixture in her cauldron, as smoke rose in the shape of a skull.
“Eyes that glisten in the darkness, please, answer my plea” she said, no louder than a whisper. Her voice was smooth as silk, and gentle as a stream. Such a tranquil maid under the cloak, and such a brave soul to use the dark arts. Long blonde hair hung over her shoulders, a sweet honey-color; her blue eyes shone turquoise in the green light of her potion’s steam. “Accept my offerings and return him, Lukie is only so far out of my reach. Give me the power to bring him back to me”
So dark was the night, yet the moon shone full. The cauldron began to shake, and soon over-flow as well. The girl stepped back, shocked. What could cause this? Behind her, a large gate began to rise from the ground. The girl spun around in shock, what could be causing this? The gate was large and black, patterns and runes edging its boarders. Two gargoyles stood imposingly at the top, each holding an orb. Fog emitted from the bottom of the gate, so, she could see no more than that.
“Annabell Vallery,” a voice gently called, the voice may have been from the gate itself. Annabell didn’t know, “You possess great potential in your abilities, do you truly wish to save your younger brother?”
“Who’s there?” Anna felt her heart jump into her throat, not sure what to say. She stepped towards the gate.
“I am none but a messenger; you, young Annabell are invited to the magic academy of Doom Island. Enter through these gates and you will learn much, but, you may not turn back once you are there”
“What about my family?” she asked, playing with her hair.
“They shall be informed that you are gone. Do not worry of it”
“Fine then”
And thus our story begins. Annabell Vallery’s quest to save her little brother, and her entry to Doom Island Magic Academy is finally at a start. May the heroin have the best of luck on her adventure, she may need it.
Chapter One; Welcome to Doom Island Magic Academy!
Annabell had never been anywhere so strange in her life. It was like a midevil castle, but, not. Somehow it felt modern, and still imposing and olden. Students chatted, most of them inhuman. She saw so many things at once; she could hardly take it all in. Was this place real? Doom Island; was that a real place? Anna couldn’t help but think of how peculiar it all was, and so sudden…
“So you’re Annabell Vallery?” she heard a high-pitched female voice say, she looked for the owner, nobody was there though.
“Um…that’s my name” she said cautiously, Anna had read about some strange things in her studies on magic, but, voices from nowhere?
“Oh wow! I never thought that I would see a human with such a powerful magical aura!” finally she identified the voice; a small black cat came from the shadows, a pink bow tied on her tail. “Hi there, Annabell! I’m Ebony!” she purred.
“Hi there, um, Ebony” surely, this was a dream; she confirmed it now, a talking cat?
“Before you ask, yes, I’m real” Ebony squeaked, rubbing against Anna’s leg, “humans have such simple minds” Anna stared at the cat, unsure of how to react.
“Is there anything else I should be aware of here?” she asked, her wonder showing on her face, completely mystified by this place.
“I dunno” Ebony replied, “You can ask other students, but, it would probably be best to go get some supplies first”
“Thank you” Anna uttered, not sure what else to say.
Thus, Annabell Vallery was led to the island’s market, where she would meet her next friend. The area was busy, many strange people and creatures of all sorts. Ebony listed things she would need for classes, school books and supplies. The next notable event is when she runs into a boy with red hair and bright green eyes.
“I’m sorry!” the boy exclaimed, after all, they did run into each other, well, more so he tripped and fell onto her.
“It’s alright” Anna almost laughed, that was certainly a strange way to meet somebody, “you’re not hurt, are you?”
“No, not at all. Are you?” he replied, getting up and holding out his hand to her.
“I’m fine, thank you” Anna felt a strange feeling from the boy. Something about him felt off, out of place. When he helped her up, that feeling intensified. His hand was warm; that alone would have been irrelevant, but, it was the fact that he was closer to ‘on fire’ than ‘warm’. His hand quite literally burned hers.
“I am SO sorry!” he cried, appearing to have noticed when she was taken back.
“What’s with the fire?” Anna asked, staring at the boy in wonder.
“Um… well…” he stuttered, his bright green eyes shifting to the ground, “My power isn’t very well controlled. Sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you…”
“So, you’re a fire spirit of some sort?”
“Oh, no! I’m not, just a constellation spirit… My name is Leo, Leo Stargate. What’s yours?” he smiled weakly, now that Anna thought about it, his hair was kind of fuzzy-looking and loose, kind of like a lion’s mane, and his eyes were kind of cat-like.
“I’m Annabell Vallery, just call me Anna though” she couldn’t help but notice his expression go from flustered to panicked.
“Oh! I-I am so sorry, Miss Vallery! I-I-I had no idea…” he shifted as he spoke, calm was something this boy certainly was not.
“You had no idea that what?” Anna looked at the boy with wonder.
“Don’t worry, Leo,” Ebony decided to chime, catching the Constellation spirit’s attention, “Annabell is just like any other beginning witch you’ll meet, just a lot more powerful with some natural talents and abilities”
“Is there something I should know here?” Anna asked, staring at the cat, “You never said anything about me being famous,” Ebony just purred in response.
“Even if Ebony didn’t, I will” Leo smiled meekly, “it’s really rare for humans to come across magic, much less actually study it. Even on top of that, you’ve managed to use it and make it noticeable that you have remarkable abilities even without training. There are some people saying that you’ll be the next Xino Angelis!”
“Xino Angelis?” Annabell tried to recognize the name, it sounded familiar, but, she couldn’t place her finger on it.
“Leo, she’s human. He wasn’t as famous to them, just another person burned at the stake, SURE he was a guy, but, that doesn’t mean he’s remembered” Ebony purred, stretching out.
“He was a powerful wizard who freed spirits, he’s really famous for bringing peace and stopping the battle between humans and almost all other races, he protected our kind, and set up seals on what humans could see so they wouldn’t hunt us down anymore” Leo was beginning to get excited, showing deep admiration for the wizard. Xino Angelis, just who was that guy? If he wasn’t famous among humans, why did Anna recognize the name? It was odd, but, maybe answers would come with time.
“He protected more than just spirits, dragons, demons, fairies, elves, you name it” Ebony added.
After a while more of talking, Leo decided it would be best to go and buy more school supplies. Anna was happy to have more company than just a cat, even if he was kind of weird. Leo was quiet for the most part, but he was useful when it came to counting out the strange currency of this place. Ebony wasn’t very good at dealing with money, being a cat and all.
The more they shopped, the more Annabell could see Leo was well-known. Just about everybody in the shopping center knows his name. Her curiosity finally got the best of her when they were buying potion-makings.
“Leo, why does everybody seem to know you?” Anna asked, “This place seems big enough that it’s not an everybody-knows-everybody town”
“Oh…um…” Leo looked at the ground, fidgeting, “My father is kind of rich…he’s really well-known” he didn’t look rich. Anna could hardly even believe that he was. Leo was shy and gentle, and then again, so was Lukie.
“What do you mean by ‘rich’?” Anna smiled, her new friend shifted more, “Does he run a business, or is he nobility of some sort? Or is there some other meaning here that there isn’t among the humans?”
“He’s the head of the Stargate Family, and the master of all spirits of the night. Think of it kind of like the king of England!” Ebony piped up, purring, “Night spirits are a group of demons, Leo just happens to be of the star-variety!”
“Demons?” Anna wasn’t able to finish her statement before Leo panicked.
“We aren’t dangerous I promise! I know that humans say lots of mean things about us, but, not all bad!” he said quickly.
“To be honest Leo, I don’t think I could be scared of you if I tried” Anna smiled; “you’re so not-scary it’s almost sad” Leo blushed at her words.
“I-is that really true?!” she couldn’t help but laugh, she knew him for no more than a day, but, already she saw that reaction coming. She could read Leo like a book, and she wanted to make sure he knew it.
The day continued with no new news... School starting would bring the real excitement.
“Eyes that glisten in the darkness, please, answer my plea” she said, no louder than a whisper. Her voice was smooth as silk, and gentle as a stream.
