There are two sides to the universe: the physical and the spiritual. They can be at balance similar to that of light and dark, good and evil. Upon the slightest shift, however, one will take over and replace, or even control the other force.
A being called Ash, the entity of fear was how she was known, desired such a balance. She wanted equilibrium with a human, Ash searched out a kind, quiet and studious child. Her name was Sky.
In a dreamy haze one night Sky saw a vision of a spirit with lucid red eyes and silvered hair. The figure approached her, commenting on her clear blue eyes and snow hair. Ash noted that not only were their physical appearances so contrasting, but such was also the nature of their personalities: their spirits. The two of them had an instant connection through their innate desire for the balance of all things, and yet their differences balanced each other out perfectly. From then on they resided in the same spiritual and physical body.
Another spirit, by the name of Des Blood, wanted control. She wanted to spread pain on all those around her. She herself was the entity of pain and wanted such recognition. Des was aware of Ash. She saw Ash as a potential partner due to her control over fear. Pain wanted to be feared by all. Des knew then that she had to get close to Ash somehow so she spied on her new form and saw a close friend of the human’s. Sky had always been close to Sadie.
It was then that Des decided to go after Sadie. Des could see that this particular human was small, frail and innocent. She knew it would be easy. And most of all, Des knew she would get her chance.
Thump.
Thump.
Was it the sound of her heart? Or her feet pounding the earth as she sprinted with all the strength contained in the biotic vessel she inhabited? The girl ran and could no longer tell the difference. Both sounds were equally loud, equally obnoxious and equally frightening. Her hair was tangled and soaked in sweat, her body coated with slithering lines of crimson. Her own blood spilled over her pale skin as the trees whipped her when she ran through them. They cut into her flesh with a stinging sensation followed by the warm release of fluids.
Below her feet was a protruding root. It caused her to crash face first on the mucky ground. Once she lost her balance there was nothing she could do. The black night overtook her vision for the final time. She could see nothing. “HELP ME!” her voice echoed through the cold air.
“Don’t be afraid.” The raspy whisper voiced. The figure, darker than the blackness in the sky, crawled over to the fallen girl as she struggled. Agonizingly slow. One shadowy hand reached out and brushed along the bare leg, along the terrified girl’s porcelain white skin. The contact caused it to peel away, leaving deep red gashes and the flowing red substance. “Let me take you.” The next whisper leaked right into the girl’s ear. A sense of overwhelming pain entered her body, simply from the light touch and the sound.
She screamed, screamed for anyone, anything, to come save her from this monster.
“Calm down…” The girl could feel the quiet sound waves filling her with treacherous, gut wrenching and heaving, aching pain! “I need your body…Sadie...” Sadie’s eyes fluttered shut as the black shadows clasped over her mouth, leaving open wounds as they touched her skin once more.
Chirp.

“We are almost there!” Sadie grinned when she looked behind herself. She could see her close friend, Sky, silently strolling along to catch up. Sadie’s memory from the previous night was hazy; she could not recall a clear image of anything. She just assumed it was a wacky dream. Now she was off with Sky, school had just ended and it was time for them to study for their upcoming tests. The two girls had a favorite spot in the woods just at the edge of town. It was quiet and peaceful.
Sky smiled a little, it had been a long school day and they were both happy to get out. “Did you start that homework?” she smirked a tad. Sky knew that Sadie probably didn’t, it was rare when she started things before the last minute (sometimes the literal last minute).
At this Sadie got a distressed look. “Uh-I” she began to stutter, running her hand through her messy black hair. Sky chuckled and patted her on the shoulder when she caught up. Sky was significantly taller than Sadie. Sadie sighed and began to walk once more, looking slightly embarrassed.
White light streamed through the trees, creating a mirage of illumination on the ground. The sky was pale blue as soft, light clouds swam through it at a snail’s pace. Sadie and Sky trotted through the trees to find their favorite studying place.
The two of them had met and known each other for a while. It was soon after they met that they decided to trail to the woods for a more comfortable place to collaborate on assignments. They came to understand each other really fast mostly due to Sadie’s innate way of looking in on a person’s way of thinking shortly after knowing them. She may act like a child and display the physical and mental traits of one, but Sky knew better than anyone that there was more to her. Sky quickly admired that, the ability to be so carefree yet so insightful all at once. Sky had noted that on this particular day Sadie was wearing tall socks, like she was covering something up. It was fairly warm so it didn’t make much sense for her to wear socks that would normally be worn in winter.
Sky stayed quiet, she didn’t talk much. That was where Sadie played her role in their friendship. She was the talker. Sky silently observed her. As they got farther in Sky noticed a twitch in Sadie’s demeanor. Something in her facial expression, in the way her lips positioned themselves on her face, in the way her eyes slanted. Sadie’s face changed, yet she still looked like Sadie. It wasn’t until they passed their normal spot, Sadie acted like she hadn’t noticed a thing, that Sky knew something was wrong.
Her hand slid to the fringe of her school uniform skirt as on her thigh she hid a pocket knife. A couple of bad experiences left scars on her light skin. Since her past scuffles Sky had always carried small weapons on her; she never expected to have to use them but she always had to be prepared nevertheless.
Sadie turned around to face her friend, her face was not the same as the bubbly expression she always carried her eyes no longer wide and full of curiosity and innocence. Rather, her eyes turned pitch black. Sky stopped walking to observe what had just happened. Sadie’s eyes, her pale amber eyes, suddenly faded to a pitch black, the contrast of the dark eyes on her white skin, which also seemed to turn lighter with the change in her eyes. She gave Sky a coy smile. “Sadie? Are you alright?” Sky’s voice sounded mature and concerned as it echoed through the now quiet woods. Sky had just noticed that there were no more chirping birds, the insects were quiet and the other animals seemed to be hiding. All was silent as the sky began to fade to dusk. Sadie had led Sky far past their usual spot; so far in fact that it was three hour detour.
The two girls took steps closer to each other. Sadie then grinned, her tangled waves transformed from ebony to a fierce dark shade of red as her eyes became more and more black. Her hand slipped behind her back and under her shirt to pull out a cleaver from its hiding spot, it had been impossible to notice it due to the girl’s petite stature and how baggy the school uniform was on her. She no longer looked like Sadie; it was Des taking control of the body. With such a powerful spirit the physical traits of the vessel altered to bend to the spirit’s display of control. Since Des had simply taken over and possessed her, there was no agreement. It was simply that the stronger spirit could subdue the weaker at any point they pleased. Des had no trouble pushing Sadie out and taking control of the body, it belonged to her now.
Sadie lunged at Sky, knife in hand and aimed at her midsection. In response, Sky slid the pocket knife from under her skirt and sliced along Sadie’s arm as she dodged the blow. Sadie dropped the knife, glaring at Sky. Was this even Sadie anymore!? “Who are you?” Sky’s voice began to change, it began to sound deeper.
“Why, my name is Sadie.” Des was now mocking Sky with the transparent façade. She in all actuality had no intention of fooling Ash but she saw nothing wrong with having a little fun before she got to business. Des took enjoyment in emotional pain as well. She knew that because of their balance Ash and Sky were always conscious at the same time. Sky was watching her dear friend get taken over by a dark entity. Ash had heard of Des, she knew who she was and actively called her out to be the demon she was.
“You are not the Sadie I know.” Sky reached up to her right eye, which was covered by a snow white eye patch. The colour matched that of the shade of her hair, as to keep it well hidden. Most people never noticed she even had an eye patch on. Her fingers gently wrapped around the thin material and then clasped it. She slid it down her face and after the white ribbon had come untied she let it fall to the ground. Sky used it to hide her right eye due to the fact that rather than being ice blue, like her left, it was deep crimson. “Tell me what your name is, demon.” It hadn’t taken long for Sky to figure it out, but that was because she wasn’t Sky anymore. With the loss of the eye-patch Sky gave the physical control to Ash, that was part of their agreement. When the red eye was visible Ash was allowed to speak through the vessel. Ash honoured that, even fear was humble, and she never broke a contract.
The petite girl cackled. The day was shifting to night, making it even more clear how long Des had taken to lead Ash and Sky away from civilization. Why had this demon led them out this far? “Fine, you caught me.” Her voice taunted, sounding playful. “My name is Des.” She paused for a moment, and then smirked, “Nice to meet you, Ash.”
Ash was in complete control now; Sky was in a state where she would have gotten emotional. Ash was monotone and never lost grasp of how she felt. This was bad. They both knew that Sadie was in trouble and Sky knew she could not help at the moment. She allowed for Ash to take complete control, however do to her still being conscious in the body with full control of her spirit, the left eye was still the pale blue that represented Sky. She was no longer the quiet, observant, studious student who was Sadie’s best friend. Her red eye was revealed and her hair turned a dark gray shade. “How do you know my name?” her voice was cold. Though she was anxious of this strange demon’s motives, she knew she couldn’t show it.
“I’ve been watching you,” Des spoke slowly, not so much to watch her words closer but to give them more time to sink in. She took more steps towards Ash, with each step her voice seemed to seep into Ash’s skin, causing the same kind of pain it did to Sadie’s upon Des’ possession of the vessel. Ash cringed a little, but didn’t move. She was fully determined to confront this beast inside Sky’s companion. “I want you to help me.” They were less than thirty centimetres away from one another now.
A groan was exhaled from Ash. “What could I gain from that? I have no desire for power.” Ash could see where this was going. Des wanted to use her to help her seize control of the fates of more humans, by the method of death. Des was power hungry and sought the pleasure of taking life while in a physical form. Ash understood this desire but as far as she was concerned it was not worth acting on. Ash saw value in the balance of light and darkness, which was why she shared a body with such a kind hearted human. Sky was the light. Ash was the dark. They matched and balanced each other out in a perfect equilibrium.
As Ash could understand Des, Des could understand Ash. Des knew that if she was set on getting Ash as her partner she would have to change the balance she had with the human. She needed Ash to be the dominant, or better yet, only force in the vessel. “You would not simply gain power, but the pleasure of causing PAIN!” Des’ words crawled into Ash’s ears, causing blood to stream out and down her neck. Ash grimaced, tempted to attack Des or simply run away. She knew that neither would be a good move at this moment. “Pain is the confirmation that we are alive, it hurts in a way that only pain can. That is an art; pain is the most pleasurable of arts. I want to inflict it on everyone. I want everyone to feel the beautiful agony-”
Des was interrupted by Ash’s lips pressing against her own. This was no show of love or affection. The physical contact allowed for Ash to fill Des’ sight, her thoughts, and her feelings, with an overtaking, overpowering fear. It was as if Des’ insides had all squirmed inside out, her brain itself twisting into abnormal shapes and her sight was riddled with fields of blood, visions of decomposing bodies and shadow people. She was seeing the brink of insanity itself climbing into the pit of her soul and tearing its way through it. Des became quiet, her eyes went blank and her body limp. Ash backed away from her, examined her and thought to herself that this was all too easy.
Without warning, Des laughed, and laughed, and laughed. The laughter was not that of a sane person amused by a joke, it was that of a mindless animal not knowing how to cope with themselves. She slid the cleaver across her arms, spilling her own blood and then proceeded to lick the thick liquid off the knife. It streamed down her chin and dripped onto her clothes, the mess was unsightly. Soon the knife involuntarily dropped to the ground and Des fainted. The hair on her head became black once more and her eyes slid closed.
Ash sighed. She picked up her eye patch and after wiping the dirt off she wore it again. She then picked up the small, bleeding girl. Sadie was limp in her arms. As Ash became Sky, she walked onwards toward her house. It might not have been the best idea to allow the vessel of Des into her home, but she needed to save Sadie, no matter what that might take.

The students in the halls opened and closed their lockers, getting books for the next class. It was only the second hour of the school day. Sky had cleaned Sadie’s wounds from the night before and this morning they walked together.
Everything was normal so far. This relived Sky a bit; she thought maybe Des was scared off. Though Ash was not so convinced she did nothing to influence Sky’s hopes. However, this relief faded fast as Sadie looked Sky in the eyes, didn’t say a word and grabbed her wrist, dragging her out of the public hallway and into an empty classroom. Her eyes flickered once more, to that pitch black.
“Stop hiding, Ash!” her voice was raspy and vexed. Sadie was gone and Des was back, red hair, ebony eyes and slanted glare.
Sky sighed “Why do you have to have her?” She would never admit to wanting to cry at that moment, but for a split second emotion overtook her. Sky had the notion, the hunch, that she would never have her friend back. As she lost control of herself Ash took over. Ash couldn’t let Sky do anything stupid.
“I will not help you, Des.” The words seemed final, but they wavered a little as the setting changed. They were no longer in the physical world anymore. All four spirits had transitioned to the plain of souls, the spiritual side of reality. Sadie was chained up in a distorted position. Des scowled at her crying face. Tears spilled from Sadie’s eyes as the chains began to tear into the skin of her soul. Sky and Ash shared the same spiritual body, their difference being seen in the red eye that represented Ash and the blue one for Sky. They really had achieved the perfect balance of light and dark, not only were they in balance in a physical form but also in that of a soul.
Des had a sly look; she caressed the side of Ash/Sky’s face, paralyzing them, sending pain to them as a tranquilizer. She moved her hand away and before there was time to blink she had ripped the blue eye from the spiritual form. “You no longer have to cater to light.” Des held her hand up, her long fingers wrapped around the eye; Ash covered the empty, leaking socket with her hand and stared at her counterpart with a dilated pupil. The hand around the blue eye snapped together, destroying it. The eye that was Sky was reduced to nothing more than a small puddle of chunky mush.
The figures around Des screamed, in agony not of physical pain but in the realization that they had lost the last light. Following that would be the loss of innocence as Des made her way to the chained spirit. She gently stroked Sadie’s hair before grasping it and tearing her head from her body. The plain of the souls was now a lake of blood. No more words were spoken as they snapped awake into the physical world once more.
Ash and Des, now the single possessors of their vessels as the other two spirits were left mutilated and destroyed. Des grinned at her newfound partner, as Ash became overtaken by her own darkness. They both shared the same desire, to spread PAIN and FEAR, to artistically replicate their feelings inside the minds of others. It was time to kill.
“Let us erase the stars from the ebony sky.” Des purred and took Ash by the hand, as they walked out into the public halls, out into a crowd of unsuspecting students and teachers.
